August 2006 - National Sprint Championships 2006
|
 |
It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for LPRC drivers in the National Sprint Championships at
Stewartby, an event usually associated with the biggest fields of the season. The club was
represented in all but the S850 and OSY classes.
Joe Owen had high expectations in T850 after beating Simon Emerson from Oulton Broad in the
Bodymoor National last month. Joe had to make do with second place in the first heat but won
the second. Unfortunately he then had engine problems in the third heat and failed to finish,
leaving him in 5th position overall.
Malcolm Goodman, won the hydroplane race in his 0-250, reaching speeds of almost 100 mph lying
down.
Ben Morse and Matt Palfreyman were in one of the best supported classes - J250. Ben took pole
and won all three heats, with Matt having to work hard to maintain his 5th position on the grid
under some stiff competition from the Oulton Broad drivers.
The S2000 races were as exciting as ever, even though there were only 5 entries. Our Commodore
Paul Balfour led all three heats from the start with Mr Bill (Bill Owen) close behind. Steve
Fitzsimmons had a mixed weekend having engine trouble during the first heat on Saturday leaving
him in 5th place. By Sunday the engine gremlins had been sorted, but after getting a good start
in the second heat he hooked badly on the first lap having taken in water on the start line.
He then had to work hard during the rest of the heat to finish 4th. In the final heat, all went
well and the LPRC drivers crossed the line in a 1 - 2 - 3 finish. Final results for S2000 saw
Paul Balfour in 1st place, Bill Owen in 2nd and Steve Fitzsimmons in 4th.
With one race remaining for all but the S2000 class (2 remaining), Ben Morse can't be beaten so
he will be the J250 British Champion for the second year running whilst Paul Balfour takes a
strong lead into the next round of the S2000 class.
